Background
In 2003, the Canadian Judicial Council formed a subcommittee of their Administration of Justice Committee to consider the growing phenomenon of litigants appearing in court without representation. The SRL subcommittee commissioned research "to assess the nature and extent of challenges presented to trial and appeal courts across Canada by self-represented litigants (SRLs) and to prepare a set of practical suggestions for Canadian judges and court administrators."
The material developed as part of that research includes an extensive, annotated bibliography on self-represented litigants. The nearly 600 records in the annotated bibliography have been added to the Forum's Civil Justice Clearinghouse.
Expanding the Collection
As new material on Self-Represented Litigants is identified, the Forum will expand the SRL collection with new records. If you are aware of a recent case or article which should be added, please let us know at cjforum@law.ualberta.ca.
